Middelkerke presenteert nieuw casinogebouw als uniek duinlandlandschap
Bouwteam Nautilus wint competitie voor het realiseren van nieuw ankerpunt aan de Belgische Kust waar gebouw en landschap in elkaar overvloeien.
Middelkerke krijgt binnenkort een iconisch casinogebouw. Het nieuwe casino zal niet worden ondergebracht in een losstaand gebouw, maar wordt geïntegreerd in een vernieuwd landschap dat de historische relatie van de badplaats met de zee herschrijft. Dat blijkt alvast uit de eerste ambitieuze plannen van bouwteam Nautilus, door het gemeentebestuur gekozen tot winnaar van de ontwerp- en bouwwedstrijd voor het casino gelegen aan het bekende Epernayplein.
“Met dit projection krijgt onze kust een nieuw ankerpunt, dat ook het karakter van Middelkerke goed weerspiegelt”, zegt burgemeester Jean-Marie Dedecker. “Het straalt zowel kracht, soberheid als verfijning uit, met veel liefde voor zee en duin. Daarnaast kan dit projection de start betekenen van een vernieuwd centrum van Middelkerke waar het aangenaam wonen en vertoeven is.”
Samen met een team van stedenbouwkundige experts heeft de gemeente Middelkerke de voorbije maanden vier weerhouden projecten voor het casinogebouw in detail bestudeerd. Na een grondige evaluatie, heeft het gemeentebestuur bouwteam Nautilus aangeduid als winnaar, een samenwerkingsverband tussen ontwikkelaar Ciril, hoofdontwerpers ZJA (architectuur) en DELVA (landschapsarchitectuur), OZ (casino- en hotelontwerp), uitvoerend architect Bureau Bouwtechniek en aannemers Furnibo en Democo. Zij worden bijgestaan door experts van COBE, VK Engineering, Beersnielsen, Witteveen+Bos, Plantec, MINT en Sertius.

The Nautilus consortium wins the competition to create a new architectural anchor along the Belgian coast, with a design that seamlessly connects the building with its surrounding landscape.
The municipality of Middelkerke in Belgium will soon be enriched with an iconic casino. The new casino will non be housed in a dedicated building, but will be integrated in the landscape in a way that rewrites the historic human relationship of the coastal town with the sea. This is revealed in the ambitious preliminary design of the Nautilus consortium, who were selected by the council as winners of the Design & Build competition for the casino located at the well-known Epernay square.
“With this projection our coast will be enriched with a new architectural anchor, that accurately represents the character of Middelkerke”, according to the mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker. “It transmits strength and soberness as well as sophistication, with a lot of love for the sea and the dunes. In addition, this projection may intend the beginning of the renewal of Middelkerke’s town centre as an appealing place to live and visit.”
Together with a team of urban planning experts, the municipality of Middelkerke studied the four selected proposals for the casino building in detail over the yesteryear few months. After a thorough evaluation, the council selected the Nautilus consortium as the winner, a collaboration between developer Ciril, chief designers ZJA (architecture) and DELVA (landscape architecture), OZ (casino and hotel design), executive architect Bureau Bouwtechniek and contractors Furnibo and Democo. They are assisted by experts from COBE, VK Engineering, Beersnielsen, Witteveen+Bos, Plantec, MINT and Sertius.
